Cast:
Hand to God explores the startlingly fragile nature of faith, morality, and the ties that bind us.
Please note while all characters listed as teens are intended to be 15-17 years of age, adult actors will be cast in these roles.
Jason/Tyrone- A shy teen who has a talent for manipulating puppets, and a puppet who has a talent for manipulating people.
Margery- Jason’s Mother, devout but conflicted.
Timmy – An ill-mannered teen in the puppet ministry.
Jessica- Another teen in the puppet ministry, a budding puppeteer herself.
Pastor Greg- A good, single, man of the cloth who is trying to guide the flock.
For those interested in being considered for one of the puppeteer roles (Jason or Jessica), along with the above, please send a short video dialogue (either something scripted or something improvisational) between yourself and some type of mouth puppet (think sock or Muppet). Feel free to use your own puppet, if you have one. If you don’t have one, a simple sock on one hand will suffice. We are looking to see how you might approach playing/differentiating between two characters at the same time, as is called for in the play. Be sure to frame the dialogue in such a way where we can see both you and the puppet at the same time. If y’all want to throw a Texas accent in there, much obliged.
Synopsis:
Black Comedy. 2 women, 3 men. Margery, a recently widowed mother, looks for comfort in the church and is tasked by Pastor Greg to lead the Church’s Christian Puppet Ministry in the devoutly religious, relatively quiet town of Cypress, Texas. However, her anxious teenage son, Jason, is going through some changes. Awkward around girls and still reeling from the death of his father, Jason develops an unusual relationship with his puppet, Tyrone, who takes on a sacrilegious and shocking personality all its own. Margery, the teens of the puppet ministry, Pastor Greg, and even Jason himself will have to confront the horrible possibility that Tyrone just may be the Devil incarnate.
Gallery Players strives to create an inclusive cast and invites anyone to audition regardless of ethnicity, race, physical attribute, gender expression, sexual orientation, age, and ability.
