Based on Alison Bechdel’s award-winning and groundbreaking graphic memoir, Fun Home is a musical about the stories we tell ourselves to better understand our lives. After the sudden death of her father, adult Alison tries to piece together the narrative of her life and wonders where her perspective might have only captured some of the truth. Moving through memories, Alison revisits her unconventional childhood, her joyous discovery of her queerness as a young adult, and moments where she considers what was happening outside her frame of reference. A musical about growing up and outgrowing your parents, it is a story about breaking generational patterns and embracing your whole self. Winner of the Tony Awards for Best Musical, Best Score, and Best Book, this musical made history for being the first all-women writing team to win these awards.

Our Town is the beloved story of the people who live in the small town of Grover’s Corners. A nostalgic tale, told by an endearing narrator, transports the audience to a simpler time when family and community were the cornerstones of daily life. Told in three acts, “Daily Life,” “Love and Marriage,” and “Death and Eternity,” we watch as seemingly mundane moments become profound experiences. This version of Our Town, as seen in the recent Broadway revival, is the definitive version of Thornton Wilder’s enduring play. Our Town is a theatrical revelation that will make you appreciate the ordinary moments in life.

Gallery Players has often successfully produced new musicals as part of their season, such as Yank (2007) and Like You Like It (2008). To further this idea, Gallery Players has created a new program in order to directly support the development of new musicals. OVERTURES will offer staged readings of new musicals, thereby fostering the creation of new musical theatre and supporting the talented composers and writers as they refine their work. The series is helmed by theatre director and scholar, Barrie Gelles and will feature the talents of a roster of exceptional up-and-coming performers and directors.
Overtures returns for its eighth year, bringing workshop readings of new musicals to Gallery’s stage. Come see the work of talented composers and writers as they refine their new musicals. At Overtures you can hear it here first!
